What Clients Are Saying
Award-Winning Hamilton Portrait Photographer
I grew up on the east side of Hamilton. I’ve always had a camera of some kind but recall processing a photograph I took of my mother’s independent video store, Movie Madness, in the camera club at Elizabeth Bagshaw. A classroom converted to a darkroom during lunch is where we would process our film and print our images. That was the beginning of my love affair with photography.
Since then I have photographed hundreds of actors, world-famous musicians, and celebrities. I have won multiple awards for my portrait photography and spent years photographing magazine covers and editorial portraits of the subjects of dozens of magazine articles. I have been working as a professional photographer in Hamilton and Toronto for more than a decade and am very proud of my 5-star rating on Google.
When I went to Brock University in St. Catharines, I start writing and taking photos for The Brock Press. We would roll our own film canisters and develop the images in the newspaper’s darkroom. It was the mid-1990s. I learned on my feet about documentary, reportage, and portrait photography.
After university, I spent three years working as a copy editor and photo editor at the daily newspaper in Niagara Falls, Ontario. Editing photographs from news, sports, and portrait photographers around the world taught me to recognize what makes an image impactful. Nine times out of ten, the answer is expression. Expressions convey emotion, define relationships, and tell a story.
Due to a growing concern about becoming desensitized to the horrors of the world, I left the news industry and immersed myself in improvisational comedy. I’ve been studying, performing, coaching, and directing improv since 1999 — I currently coach the McMaster Improv Team. Comedy has taught me that we remember the things that bring us joy. Most often, what brings us joy is relationships and that joy is conveyed through expression.
I believe in the power of expression so much that my first solo exhibit as a photographer is titled, Expressions, Vol. 1:The Architecture of Emotion. Photographing people’s expressions is my passion. Capturing someone’s authentic self — as hokey as that sounds — and freezing it in a moment of time for my photography clients is just as rewarding as making an audience of hundreds of people laugh.
Creating portraits that your family can look at generations from now and still feel connected to is paramount to my work. It’s why I do this. When the people we love have moved on — left for school, moved across the country, or passed on, for example — the things that keeps us connected to them are the images hanging on our walls, decorating our shelves, and filling the pages of our family photo books.
That is why I do this.
